What is artificial insemination?

Artificial insemination involves introducing sperm directly into the uterus at the most appropriate time in the cycle, thereby increasing the chances of pregnancy.

It is usually recommended in cases of mild semen abnormalities, ovulation problems or for women without a male partner.

Artificial insemination is a simpler and less invasive treatment. In in vitro fertilisation the union of the egg and sperm takes place in the laboratory, whereas in artificial insemination it occurs naturally within the woman’s body.

Sometimes the first step doesn’t have to be the most complex one. Just the right one for where you are now.

Types of artificial insemination

Partner artificial insemination

The partner’s semen is used.

Donor artificial insemination

Donor semen is used when necessary.

What is the artificial insemination treatment like?

It is a quick, outpatient procedure.

preparacion-de-la-paciente

In a natural cycle, a woman produces only one egg. In order to increase the chances of pregnancy, the ovaries are stimulated using hormones to produce more than one egg.

The stimulation usually lasts around 10-12 days and ends with the administration of a hormone called HCG. This hormone completes the maturation of the eggs and triggers ovulation, with artificial insemination scheduled for 36 hours after its administration. Throughout the process our specialists carry out serial ultrasound scans to monitor the proper growth of the follicles, and are available seven days a week.

seleccion preparacion semen

This process takes place in the andrology laboratory at Clínica Fertia. It involves selecting the sperm with the highest motility, removing immobile, slow or dead sperm, thereby improving the fertilising capacity of the sample for artificial insemination.

To select the best sperm, a technique known as MACS can also be used, which allows for the immunomagnetic selection of the sperm with the greatest capacity to fertilise the egg.

fertilizacion-en-laboratorio

To carry out artificial insemination, a speculum is inserted into the vagina and the sperm are introduced into the uterus via a cannula. It is not a painful procedure. Occasionally, some discomfort similar to that of a smear test may be felt. The procedure takes a few minutes and does not require pain relief.

Artificial insemination is carried out at the Clínica Fertia consulting room.

Two hours before the insemination, the man must provide a semen sample for preparation in the laboratory.

Does artificial insemination hurt?

No. Artificial insemination is a painless procedure and does not require anaesthesia.

It may cause slight discomfort similar to a gynaecological examination, but it is well tolerated.

Success rate of artificial insemination

The success rate of artificial insemination on the first attempt depends on factors such as:

The woman’s age

Semen quality

Cause of infertility

In some cases, several attempts may be necessary.

How many attempts at artificial insemination are recommended?

Generally, it is recommended to have between 3 and 4 attempts before considering other treatments such as in vitro fertilisation.

Each case is assessed on an individual basis.

A cycle usually lasts between 10 and 15 days, depending on the response to treatment and medical monitoring.

This is not usually necessary. Following the procedure, the patient may resume her normal activities unless specifically advised otherwise by her doctor.

If pregnancy is not achieved after several attempts, the medical team will consider other options such as in vitro fertilisation.

Yes, in some cases, although this depends on medical criteria, age and waiting times. Access is usually quicker at private clinics.
