Stories that fill us with happiness and enrich the soul! A few days ago we received a letter from Mar, a mom who has never stopped fighting for her dream, and her little Elián. When you think about becoming a mother, you ask yourself questions like: will it be a boy? A girl? Will they look like me, or their father?… You think about so many things, but you never imagine how, for some people, that journey of love and happiness becomes a struggle in every sense of the word, just to achieve something as “simple” as a baby to pour your love into.
These women set aside their physical, mental, and emotional pain and hand over their hearts, often broken into pieces, to the doctors who search and search for a solution.
In many cases, a successful outcome comes quickly, but in others, like mine, it takes longer, with all the wear and tear that comes with it. But some things take longer to achieve, others less, and some simply never come. What matters is staying positive and looking for solutions. When you feel like you can’t go on or your strength is failing, rest, take your time, and if you need to, see a psychologist — they’re a great ally not only in this process, but in everyday life.
Getting to the root of the problem often isn’t easy, since so many factors influence human reproduction, from the reproductive system itself to the endocrine, lymphatic systems, and more, and you have to go through numerous tests and treatments to find out what’s preventing you from becoming a mother — treatments that in many cases aren’t pleasant and cause emotional upheaval, with no guarantee of a happy ending. But it’s always worth remembering that a failure opens up more paths for us, showing us where not to go, and that, even though in the moment of a negative beta your world collapses, is something very valuable.
I don’t want to overlook social and family support — accompaniment rooted in love and understanding is so important. There are people who may not understand what you’re going through, and they surely don’t, because you have to live it to know it, but who lack empathy, or even people who pressure you… try to keep them away from your life, because they’re not worth it and don’t deserve you. On the other hand, you’ll find wonderful people who will do everything they can to make you smile and show you their unconditional support — they’re “people of light” who will always do you good.
At work, many women hide the fact that they’re undergoing assisted reproduction treatment for fear of losing their job. I’ve said that I have a wonderful boss, who not only knew, but is a person of light in my day-to-day life.
Infertility is talked about a little more openly nowadays, but there are still many taboos, a lack of information, and ignorance surrounding a problem that points directly at women, and which, in many cases, creates feelings of guilt, failure, frustration, and helplessness.
Human reproduction inherently requires both a male and a female component, but it’s women who “nurture,” who carry the embryo for nine months, and who give it life. That contribution is infinitely greater than the man’s, and therefore carries more potential for problems — it’s simply statistics.
I have to thank my parents (among the thousands upon thousands of things) for their unconditional love and support, and for teaching me that you always have to look forward — a family motto that has helped me so much.
To my husband, his love: we’re a great team, we went looking for our little one all the way to the end of the rainbow, and the only thing the difficulties achieved was making us stronger.
I’m at a loss for words to thank Dr. Elena Puente: where others told us there was nothing more to be done, she reached out her hand to keep helping us, and without her our son wouldn’t be here.
